Back to school blog
Throughout 2021 our team raised money for over 12 different charities and causes.
We are thrilled to say that we were able to give over $7500 to our giving project and look forward to doing the same this year.
We were absolutely thrilled that our December giving project managed to raise over $5000 for the Cancer Council. For the second year in a row the Active Physio team were up early to complete either 54 or 72 holes!
This is a massive effort and we would like to thank Paddy, Xave and Bart for joining us. 2021 team below. Link to Daily Advertiser article here.
In January we are raising money for Kruzn for a Kure Foundation again in support of a very special little boy we know. Their mission is to spread awareness about Schimke Immuno Osseous Dysplasia, immunodeficiency, and kidney disease. They are dedicated to finding improved therapy and, ultimately, a cure, and showing support to those who have been diagnosed with rare diseases.
This is our way of celebrating his 11th birthday and showing our support for him and his family. This last year has been hard for them and we want them to know they are not alone.
Background
Tayla grew up in The Hills District of Sydney, before moving to Newcastle to complete her Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) degree. Tayla has been involved in sports from an early age, including gymnastics, swimming and netball.
Tayla moved to Wagga Wagga at the end of 2019 to pursue her interest in Paediatric Physiotherapy, where she worked for a not for profit disability organisation. Tayla has a passion for treating babies and children with developmental delays, disabilities and neurological conditions. Tayla has completed post graduate training in equipment prescription and aquatic physiotherapy.
Outside of work, Tayla enjoys day tripping around the Riverina, water skiing, spending time in the garden and cooking.
Why do you love being a physiotherapist?
I love being a physiotherapist because no two days are ever the same, and I get to collaborate with families to help them achieve their goals.
2021 has brought many challenges for those we care about and our community. We are grateful for the team we have who support each other through each and every moment, good or bad in our lives. We would also like to thank all the wonderful patients who trust us with their healthcare and to the students throughout the year that we have been able to share our knowledge with.
2022 will hopefully bring about an extension to our current practice and we look forward to watching this vision come to life.
A new year often signifies a fresh start for many people. For some, this means setting new health goals, such as losing weight, following a healthier diet, or starting an exercise routine.
We love hearing all of our clients looking to take that next or extra step towards a healthier life, and we encourage you to make that goal not just an achievable one, but a sustainable one.
Your new years resolution doesn't have to be run a marathon (we are sure Ben doesn’t want to do it again in 2022!!), here are a couple that are only small changes, that will add up to make a big difference, pick one or two for this year:
Drink a glass of water with each meal
Go for a 30 minute walk twice a week
Set a sleep routine and stick to it, aim for at least 8 hours of sleep a night
Add one extra fruit and vegetable to your day
Get outside on your lunch break, and stop eating lunch at your desk
Spend 20 minutes stretching on a Sunday
Find a new hobby that you enjoy and will get you moving
Make time for something you have been wanting to do but haven’t had the time
Holidays, a time to rest, relax, recover and more often than not run after the children as they find ways to enjoy the holidays: however all good things must come to an end.
Heading to school, for the first time or returning to school, meeting new classmates and teachers can be a really exciting time for your children. As parents the excitement is variable, mixed emotions of sending your youngest to school/ high school, watching them grow and develop and seeing their knowledge bases increase exponentially. Enjoy it, and even more so enjoy it without undue injury or pain.
Read our blog filled with everything you need to know as your kids head back to (or for the first time to- how exciting!) school, including tips such as:
avoid the temptation of getting a backpack to grow into: a backpack should fit firm and sung on the back, and have wide straps that can be tightened so it does not hang past the buttocks.
A backpack should weigh no more than 10% of the child's body weight
Selecting a backpack with wide and comfortable shoulder straps, chest and waist straps can assist with posture and offload some of the weight to the hips and pelvis to decrease the load on the lower back
Ensure both shoulder straps are used, not the coolest look for the teens, but having a sore back is far less comfortable and prevents participation in sports and social activities.
Pack the heaviest items closest to your child's back: the load will be easier to manage.
Only pack what needs to be packed: use folders where possible and school lockers are a great idea: offload what you don't need all day and keep the backpack as light as possible.
Keep children physically active: such as walking to school. Physical activity and strength are important and a strong core can protect the back.
