Choosing the Right School Shoes for Your Child: A Podiatrist's Guide

As a parent, choosing the right school shoes for your child can be a daunting task. With so many brands, styles, and features to consider, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. But fear not, this blog will guide you through the process of selecting the perfect pair of school shoes to ensure your child's feet stay healthy and comfortable throughout the school year.

Why School Shoes Matter

Children's feet are constantly growing and developing, and wearing the wrong shoes can lead to a variety of problems, including blisters and long-term foot and ankle issues. School shoes are particularly important because children wear them for extended periods and engage in various activities, from sitting in class to running around at recess.

Key Features of Good School Shoes

When choosing school shoes, there are 3 key features to look for:

1. FIT

  • Make sure that there is a thumb width (approx. 1cm) between the longest toe (usually the big toe or 2nd toe) and the end of the shoe. This should be tested when standing to allow for natural toe splay.

  • Ensure there is enough wiggle room in their shoes, your child should be able to wiggle their toes without restriction

  • Check the fit of your child's shoe approx. every 6 months, as children's feet grow on average 1-2 sizes per year.

  • Make sure that the shoe is shaped like your child’s foot with a wide toe box

  • Remove the insole from the shoe and get them to stand on it and see if there is any overhang.

2. FEEL

  • Above all, school shoes should feel comfortable

  • Ask your child which shoe feels most comfortable, they should feel comfy straight away and should not require a ‘wear-in’ period

  • Avoid buying school shoes that are too heavy, stiff or bulky. Your child's foot needs to grow naturally and not be restricted in any way. Our kids need sensory feedback from their feet to their brains to improve balance and coordination. This connection can be blocked with thick, bulky or hard soled shoes

3. FUNCTION

  • Watch them walk in their school shoes, they should look natural and their gait should not dramatically change

  • To keep them hopping, skipping and jumping all day match the shoe to your child’s foot function and their activities.

Different Types of School Shoes

Depending on your Schools Uniform Policy there are various types of school shoes available, including:

  • Sports Shoes: I tend to recommend wearing a black sports shoe as these shoes can provide the most cushion and comfort for your active child.

  • Traditional Leather School Shoe: Make sure they are not too heavy or bulky

  • Mary Jane shoes: These can be a good option for younger girls, but ensure they have enough room at the toes

Remember: It's crucial to prioritize your child's foot health when choosing school shoes. By selecting a pair that offers proper fit, support, and comfort, you can help prevent foot problems and ensure they have a happy and active school year!
